When he attended SMU for his undergraduate studies, he became the first person on either side of his family to attend college. His family’s lack of experience with the college application process, coupled with a poor school counselor, cost him an Ivy League education. It’s that experience that drives him to help others. Kris began working with students on their college admissions journey while coaching high school debate; having coached multiple state champions and national qualifiers, Kris is regarded as one of the top coaches in the country. Impassioned by the impact that education has on a student's life trajectory, Kris joined Teach For America in 2010 and began working as a full-time classroom teacher.
He previously taught at the Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet and currently teaches at the Irma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School. In addition to his work coaching debate at these schools, Kris has been involved in coaching seniors through the college admissions process; in particular, Kris loves coaching students to write exceptional essays. For the students he works with, Kris helps them brainstorm, outline, draft, and revise their essays until their final drafts are effective and engaging expressions of each student's best self.
